Frequently asked questions
You may need high-value home insurance if your property or possessions exceed standard cover limits. Generally, this usually applies if:
- The rebuild value of your home is over £1 million.
- Your general contents are worth more than £100,000.
- Your valuables (such as jewellery, watches, or art) total more than £30,000.
High-value home insurance is designed to provide broader protection and flexible limits for clients with higher rebuild costs and collections of valuable items.
The cost of high-value home insurance depends on a number of factors such as the level of cover you choose and specific risks associated with your property, like flood or theft.
Premiums are generally higher than standard insurance due to the increased value insured, but they provide broader protection, higher limits, and more comprehensive cover than standard policies.
Combined buildings and contents insurance protects both the structure of your home and the possessions inside it under a single policy. It means you’re covered if your home is damaged by events such as fire, flood, or storm, and if your belongings are lost, damaged, or stolen, all under one single policy.
Your cover depends on the type of policy you buy - Combined Home Insurance (Buildings and Contents combined), Contents Insurance, or Buildings Insurance. For full details, please refer to the policy wording, which explains exactly what you are covered for, any exclusions, and inner limits.
We also provide summary guides on our product information pages for home, contents, and buildings insurance. These summaries highlight the main features of your cover but do not include every detail.
All Risks cover provides broader protection than a standard home insurance policy. It typically covers your personal possessions and valuables both at home and worldwide, including accidental damage.
Some exclusions still apply, such as wear and tear or mechanical breakdown, so it’s important to review your policy wording for full details and limits.
The policy is insured by two of the largest insurance companies in the world, which are both A-rated for their financial strength. The Buildings, Contents and Liability cover is insured by HDI Global Specialty SE. The Home Emergency and Family Legal Protection cover is insured by AmTrust Specialty.
To calculate your premium we take into consideration a number of things. Details about your home, its location and other factors that influence any associated risk. This is then coupled with what you are insuring. Together this drives your insurance premium.
‘New for Old’ means that if an item is lost, stolen, or damaged beyond repair, we cover the cost to replace it with a new item of the same type and quality, rather than its current or second-hand value. For example, if your five-year-old sofa is damaged, you would receive enough to buy a brand-new equivalent sofa, not just what your old one might be worth today.
Because our cover is based on replacement value, it can sometimes cost more than expected to replace everything on a new-for-old basis. This is why it’s important to regularly review your sums insured to ensure they reflect today’s prices.
At rivr, all contents and valuables are insured on a new-for-old basis to make sure your home and possessions are fully protected.
We don’t offer unlimited cover. Our policies are based on a specified Sum Insured, which should reflect the full cost to rebuild your home, including any specialist requirements if the property is listed.
Some insurers do offer ‘unlimited’ cover, but it’s rarely truly unlimited. It still usually depends on an accurate rebuild valuation and the property details you provide. In most cases, the protection ends up being very similar, it’s simply presented in a different way.
By setting a clear Sum Insured, we make sure your cover is transparent, accurate, and tailored to your home.
An indicative quote gives you an initial estimate of your premium, but means that we need to review your application in more detail before confirming your cover.
Here’s what happens next:
Submit your quote - Make sure you submit the indicative quote to our team so we can start reviewing your application.
Review process - Every home is unique, so we evaluate each application individually. We’ll usually contact you within one working day to request any additional information.
Underwriting decision - Once we have all necessary information, our underwriting partner Bspoke will confirm your premium and any conditions. This process typically takes a maximum of three days.
Accepting your quote - After review, we’ll send you a payment link. Once paid, your policy starts on your selected start date, and you’ll receive your policy documents.
Important: Your indicative quote may change (increase or decrease) after review.
