Frequently asked questions

What is high-value contents insurance?

High-value contents insurance provides a more comprehensive level of protection than standard home insurance. It’s designed for homes with a higher standard of finish and valuable personal possessions, such as luxury or antique furniture, fine art, jewellery, and high-end electronics. The cover is tailored to reflect the true value of your belongings and lifestyle.

Do I need high-value contents insurance?

You may need high-value contents insurance if the total value of your possessions goes beyond standard policy limits. The general rule for this usually applies if:

- Your contents are worth over £100,000

- Your valuables (such as jewellery, watches, or art) together exceed £30,000.

How much does high-value contents insurance cost?

The cost of high-value contents insurance depends on several factors such as the total value of your possessions, the level of cover you choose, and specific risks like theft.

Premiums are typically higher than standard insurance due to the increased value, but they provide broader protection and higher limits to ensure your possessions are fully covered.

What are my contents?

Your contents includes all household goods and personal possessions, such as:

Clothing and personal property

Audio and visual equipment

Pedal cycles

Tenants’ fixtures, fittings, and interior decorations

Golf buggies, electric wheelchairs, Segways, models, and battery-operated or remote-controlled toys

Motorcycles up to 50cc

Credit cards and money (including charity funds with no other insurance)

Office equipment

Outdoor items and sports equipment

Saddlery and tack

Trailers and horseboxes used solely on your property

What is not included:

Motor vehicles (except those listed above)

Boats or watercraft (except those defined under watercraft)

Caravans, aircraft (including model aircraft, gliders, drones, etc.), and their parts/accessories

Living creatures

Any part of the buildings

Items used in connection with a business (except as defined under office equipment)

This  helps you understand exactly what is covered under your contents sections of the policy.

How much contents cover do I need?

You should have enough cover to replace everything in your home, including items you take out with you. A good approach is to walk through your home room by room and estimate the value of everything as per room (both visible and stored items). This includes:

Furniture, curtains, and rugs

Electronics (phones, laptops, TVs, etc.)

White goods, cutlery, crockery, pots & pans

Clothing, shoes, books, trinkets, and sports equipment

Think in terms of a worst-case scenario. What would it cost to replace everything today?

Important: Valuable items such as jewellery, watches, fine art, antiques, collectibles, and guns are not included in the general contents sum insured, these items are covered under a separate section of the same policy.

Are there single item limits on my policy?

There is no single item limit for your general contents. Everything is covered up to your total contents sum insured, so you don’t need to list individual items.

For valuables (Jewellery, watches, art, collections etc), there is a single item limit of £25,000, which is intentionally high so you don’t have to declare every item individually! Any valuable item worth more than £25,000 must be declared separately to ensure it is fully covered. This applies only to valuables, not your general contents.

Is accidental damage covered?

Yes. All rivr policies are All Risks, meaning accidental damage is automatically included as standard. Unlike many other policies, you don’t need to add extra cover for accidental damage. It’s already built in to protect your home and belongings.

Are my personal possessions covered worldwide?

Yes. As an All Risks policy, rivr provides worldwide cover for all personal possessions, including any jewellery and watches, as a standard part of your policy. You don’t need to add extra cover for this!

Cover is provided up to the sums insured you have declared, giving you peace of mind that your high-value belongings are protected wherever you take them.

Can I get jewellery and watches cover only?

No. We don’t offer standalone jewellery or watch insurance. However, we can cover jewellery, watches, and collections as part of a full home insurance policy or a contents-only policy.

This approach allows you to have all your valuable items and home contents protected under one policy, which can be simpler and sometimes more cost-effective than purchasing separate jewellery or watch cover alongside a standard home insurance policy.

Do I need to list my bikes on my policy?

No! Unlike many other insurance policies, bikes are included automatically as part of your general contents sum insured. This means you don’t need to specify them individually, no matter their value.

This is just one of the ways our policy is designed to be simple and hassle-free, while still providing full protection for your high-value home and possessions.
